“You forgot the partridge,” Chase said to him later, as the ship was lancing toward Escutcheon and his boss’s latest brainstorm.

“So I did,” the lord said.

“And also, it’s one pear tree, not two.”

A glimmer of mischief appeared in the Eldritch’s silver eyes as he glanced over the lip of his tablet. “And not several thousand?”

“One meaningful tree is far better than several thousand,” Chase said. “Unless you’re trying to feed several hundred thousand, and there… just aren’t that many people on Chalice yet.”

“Sooth,” Lesandurel murmured, his brow knitting slightly. Then, more briskly, “I will see to the partridge. And it was no good giving her a single meringel tree without a second to act as pollinator. They are, as the princess’s man will tell us, a dioecious species.”

No arguing that. And the trees, if they took, really would look amazing framing the governor’s… well, you couldn’t call a place that size a ‘mansion.’ Particularly not an Eldritch one. It was a comfortable sized house, maybe. “So we’re up to two turtledoves. I assume you have a bright idea.”

“I, Chase Steward, am full of bright ideas.”

Chase grinned, shook his head. “Don’t I know it.”
